This tension naturally loosens over time. A drop in string tension can also result from changes in weather, exposure to extreme heat or cold, or placement of the piano against an exterior wall. Moving or transporting the piano also contributes to the loosening of the strings.
These factors, among many others, cause the piano strings to lose tension, which is why tuning at least once a year is recommended.
